The elegant flagon with the coat of arms of the Duke Ernest of Bavaria (1500 – 1560) is one of the many precious courtly Tirolean glass vessels of the Renaissance which have been preserved in astonishing numbers. Due to their high quality, these vessels are among the best glassware made à la façon de Venise. The elaborate ornamentation decorated with cold-paint lacquer partially painted on metal foil and with lavish gold-plating. The majority of the glass foundries were in Hall, Tirol, such as the foundry of Wolfgang Vitl of Augsburg, which was operated with the aid of Italian craftsmen.
