The art of working ivory underwent a renewal from about 1230/40 in Paris, where statuettes, small altarpieces and other ecclesiastical and secular luxury objects of the highest quality were made, hand in hand with contemporary goldsmiths’ work, in the High Gothic style. The iconographic programme of the bishop's crozier unites the figure of the Virgin with the Christ Child on her arm and flanked by saints in a representation of God’s Incarnation with a crucifixion on the back of the panel.
