The Prince Elector Max Emanuel bought this clock in the then fashionable Chinese style for Schleißheim Palace. The movement was made by a clock-maker from Friedberg near Augsburg. Numerous clock-makers had settled there because harsh guild regulations did not permit them to work in Augsburg. The Chinoiserie decoration was based on widely circulating copperplate patterns engraved in Augsburg which provided German artisans with motifs.
