Grammar, one of the seven Liberal Arts, the epitome of what was to instill scholarly habits in children in the Middle Ages, is also represented with the help of children on the cathedral at Chartres and Freiburg Minster. This wooden figure, however, probably did not belong to a cycle of seven. The good pupil with an ABC primer looks respectfully up to the matronly figure of Grammar while the lazy pupil turns away in a show of reluctance.
