Georg Petel, who was a friend of Peter Paul Rubens, settled in Augsburg in 1625. Once there he produced the fisrt significant examples of baroque sculpture in southern Germany. Among the finest small works executed by this sculptor, who died young, is this much-copied ivory statuette of St Sebastian, which was originally inspired by a painting by Sir Antony van Dyck.
