Hubert Gerhard's monumental bronze group of Mars, Venus and Cupid, which originally adorned the central pier of a large fountain in the inner courtyard of Kirchheim Castle, was commissioned by the Augsburg merchant-banker Hans Fugger. The artist, a native of the Netherlands who trained in Italy, also worked for the Free Imperial City of Augsburg and the Bavarian court on Fugger's recommendation. In the very latest Italian style, his creations set new standards in sculpture in southern Germany.
