The altar represents the Holy Kinship, a highly popular subject in Germany around 1500. It was made while Traut was collaborating with Albrecht Dürer on the woodcuts for the triumphal arch designed for Emperor Maximilian. The Venetian atmosphere of its central panel and its light, radiant palette strongly reveal Dürer's influence.
