It was the custom in the 19th century to decorate presents with miniature portraits. A medallion with a bust of Princess Maria Anna Leopoldine of Bavaria, a sister of King Ludwig I, has been applied to this writing coffer, which is itself covered in red velvet. In 1833 she was betrothed to the man who later became King Frederick Augustus of Saxony. That same year Joseph Stieler painted a portrait of her. This portrait was the model for the Roman miniaturist in this small-scale version.
