In Gothic art the old idea of Christ as a shoot on the Tree Jesse, that is, descended from the line of David, was linked with the symbolism of the rose itself associated with the Virgin: The virgo (Virgin) Mary is the wand or shoot (virga) from which grew the most precious flower, Jesus. There was a similar sculpture of the Virgin and Child in a Rosebush as early as 1260 on the rood screen of Strasbourg Cathedral (now New York, Metropolitan Museum).
