The curatorial tour introduces the art of ivory turning, which was practised by specialist turners but also served as a pastime for princes. Among the most enigmatic creations of this mechanical art belong since the late 16th century the so-called ‘contrefait spheres’ – hollow turned spheres containing picture frames that can also be moved.
