The holy event takes place against the painted backdrop of Bethlehem in the ruins of a stable surrounded by other buildings. Sebastian Osterrieder's figures are inspired by the Sicilian nativity scenes he found in the Schmederer Collection of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum. Osterrieder became one of the most important nativity scene artists in Europe after 1900. His figures are convincing because of their striking features, expressive gestures and fine painting. The nativity scene comes from the estate of a sausage and meat manufacturer from Aichach who acquired it from the artist himself. It was used by the family over many decades during the Christmas season.
