Description

A unique example of the large-scale embroidery craftsmanship of the Middle Ages is this altar frontal from the Bamberg Cathedral. It shows the procession of the Magi on horseback coming to venerate the Christ child. The portrayed are framed by medallions. Inscriptions refer to the fulfilment of the prophecies of the Old Testament through the birth of Christ. Two knight saints stand at both sides of the picture. The embroidery covers the entire surface of the linen background with a colourful silk sheen and shimmering gold and silver threads, so that even today one can hardly resist the magic of this work of art. The coats of arms of the Bamberg High Chapter were probably sewn on later.
