In the wake of the China craze, Europe became obsessed with porcelain. Every court that could afford it acquired or produced this coveted luxury item. Flowers, fruits, birds, mythical creatures, as well as native and exotic animals populated plates, cups, tables and banquets. But it was not just about decorative compositions, but rather a symbolic language that was not always apparent at first glance, designed to make the invisible understandable.
