Two hundred years ago, Ludwig I ascended the Bavarian throne. To mark this anniversary, the Bavarian National Museum is offering a series of guided tours exploring the life and legacy of Bavaria’s second king. Born on August 25, 1786, in Strasbourg, Ludwig came from the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, with King Louis XVI of France as his godfather. Throughout his life, he was a self-assured ruler full of contradictions, driven by an irrepressible energy—aptly expressed in his motto: “Forward, ever forward.”
