PREVIEW: Ephemeris

Dolomiten | Wattenmeer

Photographs by Georg Tappeiner

The photographs of Georg Tappeiner connect worlds: the Dolomites and the Wadden Sea—landscapes that could hardly be more contrasting. On the one hand, majestic pinnacles and rocky towers rise steeply into the sky; on the other, an endless horizon where water, sand, and sky merge into one. Yet it is the Earth’s geological history that links these regions. Where the “Pale Mountains” stand today, a primeval Wadden Sea once extended. In 2009, both regions were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of their natural beauty and uniqueness.

Shown in Germany for the first time, this exhibition of Tappeiner’s large-format photographs brings these vastly different landscapes into dialogue from an artistic perspective—a conversation between stone and water, permanence and transience. Captivating images enchant through light and emotion, telling of encounters between archaic nature and human perception.

Georg Tappeiner (born 1964) lives in Merano, his hometown in South Tyrol. He worked for many years in London and Milan, published in National Geographic, GEO, and other international magazines, and released his work in numerous illustrated books, including collaborations with Reinhold Messner and the Messner Mountain Museums.
