Description

Along with René Lalique, Lucien Gaillard is one of the leading Parisian jewellers of the Art Nouveau period. His extravagant designs were above all inspired by motifs from the animal and plant world. In this comb, open hydrangea blossoms carved out of horn, the centres of each set with a small gold mounted ruby cabochon, form the crown of an asymmetrically composed hairpin. The subject of the blossoming hydrangea is most likely borrowed from Japanese art, whose works and artistic techniques profoundly influenced Gaillard's work.
