Description

The golden medallion with the half-figure of an archangel in luminous cloisonné enamel is one of the extremely rare works of this type with a figurative representation from the Ottonian period. Its original use is not known. The style and production technique of the medallion go back to Byzantine religious imagery of the 10th and 11th centuries. In the first step of the cloisonné enamel technique, the outer form is embossed into a sheet of gold. The recess is created by dividing the image into small cells by soldering-on fine golden wire into which coloured glass flux is filled and fired thereby offsetting each colour with a golden line.
