Description
In the first third of the 19th century, the potters of Kröning faced a decline in sales because mass-produced earthenware and porcelain began to displace traditional everyday ceramics. A change in the range of objects seemed to offer them a way out. Functional tableware was to be replaced by elaborate handicraft pieces such as 'Nadlkörbl' (needle baskets) for sewing and knitting, which could not yet be manufactured by machine. The state reacted to the industrial transformation by setting up vocational trade schools. In these institutions, the budding craftsmen acquired not only technical skills and basic business knowledge, but also insight into different design styles.
