Musical Instruments

The most important pieces in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum’s collection of musical instruments hail from the personal belongings of Bavarian electors and from the Munich court orchestra. This exhibition focuses on the various aspects of music at court: From the private music-making of the well-educated members of the Wittelsbach family to the musical accompaniment of courtly ceremonies.
Moreover, the technical evolution can be traced through significant and unique instruments in this collection such as a Tyrolean harpsichord from around 1620 and a precursor to the clarinet from Nuremberg, which was made around 1700
