The Fränkische Galerie (Franconian Gallery) showcases 220 masterpieces on 1,000 square metres. Magnificent examples of panel painting and sculpture provide a fascinating insight into late Gothic and the Renaissance periods in Franconia. Highlights are works of art by Lucas Cranach, Tilman Riemenschneider and Hans Süss von Kulmbach.

The exhibition is devoted to the main works of Franconian painting and sculpture from the turn of the 12th century up to the Renaissance period, and in some cases to the Baroque period. In 1983, the oldest of the branch museums of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum was inaugurated in the majestic fortress of the Bishops of Bamberg in Kronach. In 2013/14, the museum underwent extensive renovations and the innovative lighting system now perfectly highlights the old masterpieces. Further major additions in 2020 helped expand the museum’s Lucas Cranach collection, thereby further enhancing the importance of this branch museum.
