Schloss Obernzell

Bayerisches Donauland-Museum

On July 17, 2025, the Bayerisches Donauland-Museum (Bavarian Danube Country Museum) opened at Obernzell Castle.
Covering approximately 800 square meters, the museum presents around 500 fascinating and outstanding objects showcasing the cultural history along the Danube in a modern and attractively designed exhibition. The focus lies on the eventful history of the castle, the market town with its famous black pottery, and the Danube as a "cultural string of pearls" in Bavaria.

Django Asül, a very famos bavarian comedian, welcomes visitors as the entertaining castle ghost in the role of Prince-Bishop Urban von Trenbach at the Bayerisches Donauland-Museum! Highlights include Bavaria's oldest bicycle from 1818, spectacular artworks from the "Danube School" around 1500, curious portraits of the Prince-Bishops of Passau from around 1700, and important historical models of Danube ships from the 19th century.

Moreover, original media stations in each of the three sections invite visitors to actively explore and discover. In addition, the virtual "Local Heritage Archive" brings the 20th-century history of the market town of Obernzell to life.

History of the branch museum

Obernzell Saal entlang der Donau

The branch museum was established in 1982 as the "Keramikmuseum Obernzell". The exhibition focused on the production and use of ceramics from the Stone Age to the present day.

With the support of the special investment program "Bayern barrierefrei 2023," barrier-free access to the so-called Rittersaal (Knight’s Hall) and the installation of accessible sanitary facilities were successfully completed in 2020/21.

Thanks to financial support from the federal funding program "Investitionen für nationale Kultureinrichtungen in Deutschland (INK)" and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts, the museum at Schloss Obernzell was redesigned with the innovative exhibition concept "Donauland."
