Description

Blue-glazed jugs were considered pure luxury in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in rural Bavarian households, and only the wealthiest farmers and officials could afford them. Entire sets of blue vessels were too expensive even for these customers. Individual blue vessels were used to entertain guests on special occasions, for example when visiting relatives or family celebrations. Until the 19th century, the colour blue had a special signal effect because, unlike brown, green or red tones, it was not easy to produce by hand using local raw materials. This in turn had an impact on the price.
