The decoration was randomly splashed on to the jar with a broom made of birch twigs, a process which necessitated working quickly. Speed was one of the main reasons why splashed decoration was so popular in Kröning, Lower Bavaria. Jars with hoop handles were used for carrying food, for instance to farm-hands in the fields. Their use by the poor when begging for food led to them generally being dubbed 'Bettelhafen' [begging pots].
