This silver-mounted goblet originally belonged to Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I of Bavaria. He gave it to Bettina Brentano. As the shield on the bowl and the engraved inscription on the mount inform us, the Crown Prince gave such a passionate toast against Napoleon, crying 'Down with him!' ('Pereat' ['May he perish!']), at a meeting with the Austrian envoy Count Stadion-Warthausen in Munich, in 1809 that he damaged the foot of the goblet.
