August Kiss started working on this statue of a mounted Amazon being attacked by a panther in 1837. The sculpture was cast in 1841 and erected two years later in front of the Altes Museum in Berlin. Kiss enjoyed resounding success with this dramatic work, particularly at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. It was widely acclaimed and regarded as ground-breaking for its time. Numerous replicas were made in marble and cast zinc as well as in meticulously executed small-scale versions made of silver and bronze mounted on decorative pedestals.
