In this small-scale portrait the Elector Palatine is depicted in casual everyday dress and unceremoniously seated in the privacy of his cabinet, flute in hand. His library is visible through a door with a portrait of his wife above it. These were the rooms in which he could devote himself to his favorite pastimes, not least music, which played an important role at his court in Mannheim.
