The princely vault in the parish Church of St Martin in Lauingen on the Danube, in which the Protestant members of the House of Pfalz-Neuburg were laid to rest, was opened in 1781 by order of the Prince Elector Karl Theodor. At that time the contents of the coffins examined were inventoried but only the jewellery was removed and transferred to the Münzkabinett [coin cabinet] in Munich. In 1862 these jewels, so valuable because of their assured provenance and superb quality, were moved to the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum.
