This Ecce-Homo is part of a sequence of six reliefs of the Passion Cycle by Giovanni Bologna, his greatest accomplishment of that genre and rooted in Florentine tradition. Three other versions of the cycle are known. The earliest – the only one to comprise seven scenes – was made for what was the Grimaldi Chapel in S. Francesco di Castello in Genoa (now in the university there); the models for it were finished in 1586. Another sequence is in the artist's mortuary chapel in SS. Annunziata in Florence.
