Tureens in the shape of naturalistically modelled and painted boars' heads are among the most extravagant pieces made for display on the banquet table. They derive from the custom practised at court banquets of setting a boar's head on a board. Most extant tureens of this type were made by the faience factories at Höchst and Strasbourg.
