Vessels of this type were used to catch the drops from a schnapps still, hence the term 'Weinbrandhafen' [pot for spirits of wine]. Flattened at the side, it could easily fit beneath the still. In the 19th century such jars for everyday use were usually glazed. Jars like this one – unglazed outside with painted white decoration – were only made in Lower Franconia and nowhere else in Bavaria at the time.
