Max Emanuel, the Prince Elector, whose armorial bearings with the electoral crown are above the middle door, had this cabinet made in Florence in about 1680. The pietra-dura pictorial panels, made up of various types of stone in a sort of mosaic, are a distinguishing feature of these magnificent and much sought-after cabinets. The Grand Ducal workshops of the Medici in Florence made and exported many of them.
