Giovanni Bologna's brilliantly conceived Rape of the Sabine Women is regarded as the classic solution to the problem of a figural composition which fills a space whilst also being different from every point of view; the spiraling torsion of the figures in movement makes this a prime example of Florentine Mannerist sculpture. The large marble version was set up in Florence in 1582 in the Loggia de' Lanzi. The Munich bronze is one of the finest small-scale versions.
