The powerful figure of the Virgin, the fullness of her cloak, the delicate tilt of her head and her pensive expression are distinguishing characteristics of the International Gothic Style which prevailed in 1400. Yet the rod-shaped fastening of the cloak which falls in folds from her knees and her throne, and the crisp folds it forms on the ground herald the end of that soft stylistic phase. A more stringent demarcation of body and clothing and a tendency to monumentalizing in this work look forward to conception of sculpture in the 15th-century.
