This bust of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–180 AD) is the result of the creative study and application of antique models. It was probably destined to adorn the Antiquarium in the Munich Residenz, the construction of which began in 1568. It is stylistically close to the work of Pier Jacopo Alari-Bonacolsi of Mantua, who aptly styled himself Antico.
