The magnificent brattishings and the sumptuous character of its ornate decoration recall contemporary goldsmiths' work, and its façade, with its twin towers, closely resembles the architecture of the period. This little retable is one of the earliest Rhenish hinged altarpieces to be made in the mid–14th century. Only a few years later a new high altar was made for the same church, St Clara at the Römerturm in Cologne, a master piece of 14th-century Cologne art (now in Cologne Cathedral).
