The Ichenhausen School Museum gives a broad overview of the development of education over many thousands of years. The history of schooling unfolds in a concentrated series of themes, ranging from the beginnings of school education in the literate civilizations of Sumeria and Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the Early Modern right on into the 20th century. Before the tour proper starts, visitors pass through a room illustrating the acquisition of knowledge in pre-literate prehistoric times.
Two historic classrooms illustrate the school routine of the period around 1900 and in the Weimar Republic (1918–33). A special depart-ment in the museum’s new building gives an impression of the history of Jewish schooling in Bavaria since the Enlightenment.
